UK VAT invoice checker
Check suppliers' VAT invoices before you reclaim the VAT.
MarqPDF finds the supplier's VAT registration number and checks it with HMRC's check-digit rule (both the mod 97 and the 9755 schemes), then checks the VAT rate, that the VAT and the totals add up, and that the VAT is shown in sterling.
The VAT number check
A UK VAT number's last two digits are check digits. A mistyped or invented number almost always fails them, which is worth knowing before you reclaim the VAT on that invoice.
Full or simplified invoices
Up to £250 including VAT, a supplier can issue a simplified VAT invoice with fewer details; MarqPDF notes when that applies.
Records for Making Tax Digital
The spreadsheet lists supplier, VAT number, invoice number, date, net amount, VAT and total for each invoice.
Frequently asked questions
Does it check the number with HMRC?
No. The check digits catch typos and made-up numbers; use HMRC's VAT number checker to confirm the supplier is registered.
Is it free?
Checking is free and the report shows on screen. Downloading the spreadsheet needs a free account, which includes 2 exports; after that, a Week Pass ($6.99) or Pro ($14.99 a month), see pricing.
